Egyptian Red Quartzite Taweret, New Kingdom, ca. 1567-1085 B.C. This is a beautifully sculpted model of Taweret. The piece is carved in a hard red quartzite. Taweret takes the form of a female hippopotamus and was associated with the protection of women in childbirth with her swollen breasts and large belly conveying the concept of pregnancy. Like the dwarf god Bes, Taweret had few cult temples or statues on her own but served as a popular amulet for young women. This piece is carved in the round complete with a back pillar pierced for suspension, broken at the feet with earthen encrustation and oxide staining. An extremely rare piece in a beautiful stone with nice style.. H. 2 1/4".
