Sicily, Catane; Tetradrachm signed by artist Herakleidas, c.405-402 BC, 16.89g. Gulbenkian 190-191. Obv: Facing head of Apollo slightly left; to right signature HPAKLEIDAS. Rx: Male charioteer driving quadriga. Nike above crowning charioteer; in exergue ethnic and swimming fish. Struck on an extra large flan with a complete signature of the artist Herakleidas in the right field. Beautifully struck on the reverse with only one horse's head weakly struck. Rigorous rider showing all the folds in his drapery while he fights to keep his unruly quadriga in the race. Minor planchet defects on the nose. A ding on the eye above the forehead and a slight, well documented, die break in the early stages from the left cheek through the right cheek but far less prominent on the right side. A coin on a much smaller flan not nearly as nice as this bought $69K in the January Triton sale this year. Nicely toned with some muted steel blue and tan highlights. Choice EF
